Obviously, the official announcement of the Samsung Galaxy Gear has been the main smartwatch buzz of the day, but it isn’t the only smartwatch to be announced today. Qualcomm have entered the smartwatch fray with an offering of their own called the Qualcomm Toq (that’s pronounced “talk”) which they intend to release in Q4 this year.
The Toq is going to be usable with any Android device running Android 4.0.3 or higher though won’t be running any form of Android itself. It’s also been said that the Toq can be charged wirelessly via Qualcomm’s proprietary WiPower wireless charging and will be able to get through several days without recharging. Take that, Galaxy Gear’s 24 hour battery life.
The Toq will also incorporate several other cool features like Qualcomm’s Mirasol screen technology, which is a lower power screen technology, not unlike e-ink, as well as a premium edition that will also incorporate wireless earphones, which you can see in the above photo. No pricing or specific release dates have yet been announced, but no doubt we’ll hear more about it as Q4 is bearing down on us extremely quickly.
I think we’d all love to see a bit more of this smartwatch and hopefully Qualcomm has it, or some kind of prototype, on show at IFA 2013 this week. The smartwatch market is becoming a very interesting place. Who is interesting in what the Qualcomm Toq has to offer?
