A round Samsung smartwatch is rumoured for a MWC 2015 next month

The smartwatch wars appear to be heating up, but one thing is quite clear in the early going: round smartwatches have been the ones to watch, presumably in large part to our familiarity with the round form factor. Well, apparently even Samsung is seeing the signs now and is preparing a round Samsung smartwatch, rumoured for announcement at at MWC 2015 next month. The device is apparently codenamed “Orbis”, to perhaps further emphasize its round nature, and carries the model name SM-R720.

round Samsung smartwatchAs for what the device is going to be capable of, we have very little inkling, but a Samsung patent (see above) spotted a few months back might give us a clue as to at least one option that is open to Samsung if they decided to ditch their previous designs for something a bit fresher. The rumour also says that this new round Samsung smartwatch will run Tizen, not Android Wear, which should really be a point of excitement – Google seems reluctant to optimize Android Wear for round watches, whereas Samsung has the opportunity to do this and differentiate themselves in the round smartwatch arena. Still, we have about a month and a bit to wait before we even know if the device exist, so stay tuned.
