When Samsung released a device with a new form factor alongside its Samsung Galaxy Note 4, little did we know that they would go on to sell 630,000 Samsung Galaxy Note Edge handsets. Yes, the phone with a curved edge has managed to do quite well, and while it might seem a little unusual to say this considering that the Note 4 sold around 4.5 million handsets in its first month alone, the fact that it’s doing this as a niche product with a fairly hefty price tag is not half bad.
Why this is important is that the Note Edge is in many ways a proof of concept, much like the Samsung previous curved display device, the Galaxy Round, before it, though nobody’s heard about the Round ever since. And if you’re wondering what it’s a proof of concept for, then the rumours of a double curved edge Galaxy S6, or Galaxy S6 Edge, might get your heartbeat racing. While it’s not like the Note Edge or even the S6 Edge are going to single-handedly save Samsung’s bigger problems, like falling profits, it’s at least a portion of the market that they can control, something Samsung hasn’t done as well recently.
