The number of sources that have confirmed that there is a Huawei Nexus smartphone happening has risen again with The Information‘s Amir Efrati posting confirmation that Huawei is working with Google to release a Nexus smartphone. While we were never really in doubt, it’s always good to get more confirmation from what is widely considered a reputable source. Unfortunately, that’s all that this report has to say – that the device exists – and no new tidbits were released.
To recap what we think we know about the Huawei Nexus, it’s been widely rumoured to be based on the upcoming Huawei Ascend Mate 8 which will make it a 5.7-inch device. While the Ascend Mate 8 is likely using quite a few homegrown parts, like the Kirin processor, the Huawei Nexus is expected to use more common (and arguably more powerful) parts like a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The partnership is likely to work wonders for both sides, with Huawei getting more recognition in Western markets and Google hopefully smoothing things over in the Chinese markets. A lot still has to happen between now and whenever this device eventually appears, but we’re confident it’s going to be a killer smartphone.
