I don’t think there is a single kid who grew up through the 90’s that didn’t have a HUGE collection of Goosebump books by R.L. Stine. I know I had a whole bookcase full of them. Yes, I use to watch the TV series that brought the books to life too. The saga continues to this day with a new partnership between Cosmic Forces, Sony Pictures Consumer Products and Scholastics to bring us a Goosebumps mobile game, based on the new Goosebumps movie with Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush and Jack Black. The movie releases October 16th and the game is slated to make an October appearance, but no dates are mentioned in the press release. I assume it will be near the same time. The movie is simply titled Goosebumps while the game will carry the name Goosebumps: Night of Scares.
“We are thrilled to be teaming up with Sony Pictures and Scholastic  on this ground-breaking mobile project around the equally exceptional Goosebumps series,†said Ziad Seirafi, Founder and CEO of Cosmic Forces. “The Goosebumps game will feature superbly animated characters, monsters, and scenery including a realistic interpretation of R.L. Stine’s haunted house, and a VR mode that will put players right inside the house.â€
“Cosmic Forces will help us extend the life of the Goosebumps film into the mobile space, allowing Goosebumps fans to continue engaging with the series, and its characters long after they experience the thrill of the film,†said Mark Caplan, Vice President of Sony Pictures Consumer Products. “The animation, special effects, and scares of the mobile game will be a perfect complement to the eagerly awaited film.â€
In a nutshell, Jack Black turns out to be R.L. Stine in the movie and game. This happens to be the father of the girl next door that the lead character, Zach Cooper, falls for. The manuscripts of R.L. Stine end up coming to life and the Zach, along with the girl next door, Hannah, Zachs new frined Champ and R.L. Stine, spend the evening trying to get the storybook creatures back into their books where they below.
This isn’t the first game launched with a movie and it certainly won’t be the last. I certainly hope the game doesn’t make me regret loving part of my childhood. Anyone out there at least mildly excited to catch the flick and try out the game when they launch? I know I will be. If for nothing more than nostalgia and to introduce my son to the world that is Goosebumps.
