CyanogenMod Development for the Samsung Vibrant Halted

Development of CyanogenMod 9 for the Samsung Vibrant has been halted. Abhisek Devkota released the following statement on his Google Plus page earlier tonight and it is not good news for Vibrant owners.

We are no longer supporting the Vibrant due to the inability to dial 911. We consider the issues related to this unresolvable without source code from Samsung related to the Radio interface layer and its interactions with the Audio layers and have taken the decision to no longer support this. We apologize for the inconvenience and strongly suggest that Vibrant users use a Samsung ROM due to the 911 issues with any ROMs based on open source code.

OK, the first thought we had here at AndroidStory was, why not acknowledge the bug and leave it as user beware? Well, it looks as though that was a common thought to which Mr Devkota addressed in the comments of this G+ post. Basically the largest issue here is that of public safety.

The CM team is worried about in the event of an emergency, anyone using a CM rom or one using the CM source code could potentially be at a greater risk if they cannot use 911 services in their time of need. Their stance is firm because the CM source is used on a variety of ROMs, they cannot contain it to their community alone.

This is not what Vibrant owners want to hear, but you have to respect their stance on the matter. Peoples’ safety is of greater importance than a CM ROM on your device (some may disagree).

The above situation is a very severe issue in terms of public safety, our liability and responsibility to the community. We have been aware of this bug for a while, and have been working on how to resolve it, with no success. In the end, CM source is used in a variety of ROM’s in the community, potentially impacting users outside of our immediate ecosystem. While some may see this as an issue that we can just acknowledge and move on from, the consequences of an actual emergency situation going wrong are not one we want to be a part of, whether the user is on CM or a derivative. The code base will remain present, hopefully a fix can be had; but until that day, we will not be releasing any further ROMs for the Vibrant.

Basically it comes down to them making the decision that the CyanogenMod will not put anyone at risk by continuing to develop for the Vibrant as long as the source code related to the Radio interface layer and its interactions with the Audio layers are not released by Samsung. This will be one story we will keep close eye on and be sure to keep you all updated.

Agree or disagree with the decision to stop development? let us know your opinion in the comments.
