FCC Cracking Down on Cell Phone Jammers

The FCC recently issued citations to six vendors selling cell phone jammers on Craigslist. According to the FCC’s own Jammer Enforcement page:

Federal law prohibits the operation, marketing, or sale of any type of jamming equipment, including devices that interfere with cellular and Personal Communication Services (PCS), police radar, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and wireless networking services (Wi-Fi).

Also note that Federal law states that anyone in possession of a jammer of any kind is subject to a $16,000 for each infraction or day with a series of infractions with a maximum of $112,500.

These six citations were issued as warnings, but the FCC stated, “Therefore, we caution you and other potential violators that going forward, and as circumstances warrant, we intend to impose substantial monetary penalties, rather than (or in addition to) warnings, on individuals who operate a jammer… Furthermore, the issuance of the instant citation does not preclude the Commission from taking additional enforcement action in this case.” So basically, the FCC is saying they could fine future violators or could still fine current violators, it’s open-ended.

So let this be a warning, if you know anyone that’s selling these; has one in their possession; or you, yourself have one, watch out. The FCC may be watching; these crackdowns were performed with undercover operations. Several warnings in addition to these six citations have been issued to vendors, so they’re going to continue with crackdowns as they see fit. Selling jammers is not a good business to be in right now…or ever.
