With every flagship release from smartphone manufacturers, those loyal to the particular manufacturer will often switch from last year’s flagship to the latest model. However, it looks like the HTC One M9 might be the exception to the rule as it’s been suggested that owners of the older HTC One M8 flagship aren’t feeling the urge to upgrade to the HTC One M9, or at least, not yet.
According to CompareMyMobile, a mobile trade-in site, the announcement of the M9 only resulted in a 60% spike in valuations (trade-in value quote) for the M8, and a -35.02% drop in trade-ins. Compare this to the Samsung Galaxy S6 which commanded a similar 60.2% spike in valuations, but a 187.5% jump in trade-ins of the Samsung Galaxy S5. While the sample size may be small, this does speak volumes about the general perception of the devices – the M9 is a minor upgrade to the M8, whereas the Galaxy S6 is massively different to its predecessor. Unsurprisingly though, older HTC devices have seen a large spike in trade-ins (the HTC One Mini and HTC One X in particular). We’ll have to end up seeing whether this is a wider trend which will eventually affect HTC’s bottom line, or if this is just slow uptake of the latest flagship.
