Kwikset brings official Kevo app to Android, unlock your door and more with just your phone in hand

While at CES this year I stocked by the Kwikset booth to take a look at their unlock solutions that used Bluetooth low energy tech to unlock your door without the need for a key. At the time, they only offered up an iOS app and key fobs. They were working on an app for Android with a web portal version that worked with the Nexus 6, for the most part. Today they have officially made the app a reality for Android in a limited capacity. Owners of the Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Samsung Galaxy S5 running Android 5.0 can now get in on the action.

Kevo Key Fob

In situations where others in the house may not have a compatible device you can give them the key fob. Essentially it is a Bluetooth LE 4.0 standalone device that lets you tap and unlock the door. For the rest of the family and friends who have a compatible device you can send them eKeys digitally to unlock your door. Best part is you grant the eKey user specific days and times that they key will actually work and open your door. It only takes a few taps to send an eKey and you can disable and delete it just as quickly. I can already see the potential for those who might have had to change their locks a few times from past friendships and relationships that went sour. Talk about a great way to avoid trying to get that spare key back.

Now that the Kevo app is available for a few select Android devices, it is only a matter of time before other Android 5.0 sporting devices will be able to take advantage of the system. The Kwikset Kevo system can be purchased at Amazon currently for $219.00 with additional Kwikset Kevo key fobs running $24.97.
