Nikon to possibly bring Coolpix S800c with Android 2.3 and Google Apps on August 22nd

The Android OS has huge potential across the tech boards. From phones and tablets that we already know and love, to watches, clock radios and soon cameras. We know that Polaroid was working on the SC1630 smart camera during CES in January. They planned to release that device sometime this year, but still haven’t made it happen. Now another big name in the camera industry, Nikon, is rumored to release one of their own to market on August 22nd.

The possible evidence came through Nikon Rumors. They are reporting that Nikon will be launching a new Coolpix camera, the S800c, on August 22nd. They peg the specs as

  • 25-250 mm lens
  • 3.5″ OLED screen
  • The camera runs all Google Play apps
  • The camera will probably run Android 2.3
  • Built-in GPS
  • Built-in Wi-Fi
  • Possible announcement: August 22, 2012

With the help of a filing with Indonesian Communication Agency that lists a device with the same name, it is possible. Well, the names match up at least. Whether or not Nikon is actually going to give and Android based camera a run or not is still to be fully verified as legit. With built-in Wi-Fi for connecting and sharing alongside all the power of Android at its sore, it would make a pretty nice addition to your bag. But will it really make a splash? When our phones now can take amazing photos, video, have Wi-Fi and are always on us, is a separate digital point-and-shoot style camera with Android really needed? Much of it will depend on how well it all works and how good the photos are. With Nikon topping out at 16 megapixels in their cameras, it could be pretty nice to have. Not so sure I will run to my local Best Buy the day it is out though.

Anyone out there interested in a digital camera that sports Android as its base?

PS. The image is not of the actual camera screen or camera. Just a FYI.
