A few weeks ago, Skype released their long-awaited Android app. Unfortunately for me, and anyone else who was stupid enough to buy a Samsung Galaxy S phone, Skype’s own app did not, and still does not work on any of the Galaxy S line. This didn’t really bother me though, because I’ve been using Skype on my phone for months via a third party app called Nimbuzz. Nimbuzz is one of the most used apps on my phone, because it lets me access Windows Live Messenger, AIM, Skype, and even Facebook chat all through one app, or at least I used to be able to.
Today, Skype ordered the removal of all of support for their service from Nimbuzz starting on October 31st. In doing so, they have completely stopped me from having any access to Skype on my phone. This might seem like deja vu…because up to a point, it is. Back in July, Skype blocked the IM app Fring from accessing their service. Now they’ve done the same with Nimbuzz. This has actually angered me in a big way. Not only are they stopping any form of competition to their own Android app (and for that matter, iPhone app as well), but they are also turning away millions of people who can’t use the official Skype app from using Skype on their phones at all. Nimbuzz was in no way perfect, but the fact that it had Skype access made it better than having nothing at all. And now I really do have nothing at all.
Sorry Skype, but this is simply no way to treat your customers.
