If you are like me and you hear about Tizen, you kind of wince, and wonder why it is still being talked about. I am sure not everyone feels that way, but why do we need another OS? Well, I think Tizen is Samsung’s backup plan just in case something happens with Google. I highly doubt that will happen given Samsung is Google’s number one in sales, but apparently Tizen has another strategy in mind.
Google has hopes that Android 4.4 will cut down the dreaded fragmentation that is plaguing the Android ecosystem. There is promise that KitKat will run on low-end devices with low RAM and low screen resolutions, but Tizen plans to do the same, and it will possibly be able to run on the lowest of the low when it comes to specs.  This comes with the mention of  Tizen Lite, a stripped down version of regular Tizen that can apparently run on a device with 256 MB of RAM and a 320 x 480 screen resolution, whereas KitKat can only run on a device with a minimum of 512 MB of RAM. For the most part, this won’t affect many of us considering that none of us are rocking a G1 anymore, though it’s nice to know that such low specification devices can be supported by a modern OS.
New Tizen devices should start hitting the market very soon, but I just can’t see them making any kind of impact in the market. It surely will not drive away users of Android, but maybe it will make a splash in international markets. Let us know what you think about this.
