IDC put out some new numbers on the 7th showing that, for the first time, smartphones outsold PCs. In the fourth quarter of last year, a total of 100.9 million smartphones were sold, compared to 92.1 million PCs. This trend is likely to continue as more powerful smartphones and tablets, as well as niche form factors, fill the market space and provide consumers with more options.
Not surprisingly, Nokia came out on top, selling over 5 million Symbian handsets. Following Nokia in the sales charts are Apple, RIM, Samsung and HTC. Android is heavily represented among vendors such as Samsung, HTC, LG and Motorola, further driving smartphone sales. After all, according to Canalys, Android did happen to grow 615% last year!
