2GHz Exynos 5250 announced by Samsung, twice the speed and still only Dual-Core

Those of you running a Galaxy S II know just how fast and wonderful the current dual-core Exynos chip is. Set at 1.5GHz it is a screamer. With all the talk around the latest Tegra 3 quad-core chips though, one would have expected similar movements from Samsung. If you know your stuff, more cores isn’t always better. I don’t claim to know much about that sort of stuff though. Samsungs latest Exynos 5250 sounds like it is going to do some awesome stuff though. Claiming the chip is twice as fast as its current dual-core chip. The 5250 clocks in at 2GHz and will be rocking the first SoC to use ARM’s new Cortex-A15 processor.

“The ARM Cortex-A15 brings unparalleled performance to our Exynos processor family and the exploding mobile marketplace,” said Dojun Rhee, vice president of System LSI marketing, Device Solutions, Samsung Electronics. “Designers need an application processor platform that delivers full high definition multimedia capabilities, fast processing speed and high performance graphics to meet end users’ expectation for a connected life on the go. The advanced low-power, high-performance processor technology of the new Exynos 5250 continues to deliver an unprecedented level of performance for users to enjoy a completely new mobile experience.”

To put some numbers to the chip, the 5250 is capable of processing 14 BILLION instructions per second, doubled memory band width of 12.8 Gigabytes with a display capability of 2560 X 1600 (WQXGA). The chip is a true power house that is going to take their tablets and devices to a whole new level of speed and performance.

The chips are being sampled as we speak and should be landing in devices and available to customers around Q2 of next year. Can you already hear rumors of the Galaxy S III getting started? I sure can.
