This holiday season turned out as a real money-maker for smartphone and tablet manufacturers, especially those bearing the Android and iOS moniker. Flurry Analytics released statistics from Christmas day, which show a combined 6.8 million devices were activated, up 353 percent from the 1.5 million average activations a day over the first 20 days of December. Wondering what the previous record was? Christmas 2010 saw activations to the tune of 2.8 million. I think it’s safe to say 2011 was the year of the mobile device — hopefully 2012 is a continuation and we see similar growth by this time next year.
Unfortunately, Flurry didn’t differentiate between the two operating systems, so there’s no solid number indicating how many of the activated devices were Android-powered. Keep in mind, Andy Rubin shared less than a week ago that Android was seeing 700,000 activations a day, so those numbers leave for a pretty close race throughout the month leading up to Christmas. With 6.8 million devices going live in a single day, it’s not exaggerated to think a good 3 million or so of those were Android — welcome to the club, new users!
Now, if you got a new Android phone or tablet (or even one of those darned iDevices), what was the first thing you wanted to do with your shiny new toy? Well, unless you’re like me and you went straight to the Internet to see if rooting is an option, you probably downloaded an app or two. After all, apps are the driving force behind many people’s wish to own a smartphone in the first place, right?
So, how many apps were downloaded this year on Christmas? Try 242 million — a 125% jump from the daily average from the beginning of the month. Last years number of downloads reached 150 million. Anybody wanna start taking bets on next year’s numbers?
