Accessory Review: Otterbox Commuter Case for the Vibrant and G2

Protecting your $500+ Android investment is almost a requirement anymore. Let’s face it, accidents happen, and sometimes a simple drop from a chair to a floor can really ruin your day. That’s where a case can really save your, well you know. The problem with a case is not about how much it cost’s but more if the cost is worth the product. It needs to be solid feeling, rugged and provide protection for your investment.

There are many cases out there that range from gel skins to hard plastics. The ultimate case is a combination of both. That is where Otterbox comes in. They have taken the 2 designs and put them together to make a very sold, rugged, stylish and shock absorbent case.

So you might be asking what makes this series of cases so much better than any other case out there. First is material, the inner shell is made of a very durable silicone material that adds a layer between the phone and the outer shell. The out shell is made of a high-quality polycarbonate material. What is polycarbonate you ask, well I found a great description:

Polycarbonate is a versatile, tough plastic used for a variety of applications, from bulletproof windows to compact disks (CDs). The main advantage of polycarbonate over other types of plastic is unbeatable strength combined with light weight. While acrylic is 17% stronger than glass, polycarbonate is nearly unbreakable.

The key term is ‘nearly unbreakable’, you can break it if you are determined enough. For all practical purposes, it will easily protect your device from your everyday complications. I don’t recommend shooting it with a gun though.

Inside the box you will receive the silicon shell, the polycarbonate outer shell, a clear self adhesive screen protector with a tool to help apply it. All in all, you get everything you could need to protect your phone.

Now, on to my thoughts about the latest releases by Otterbox. The commuter series case for my Samsung Vibrant is even more than I expected. I honestly expected it to make my device feel bulky and hard to use. Truth of the matter is it didn’t. The addition of the case doesn’t add much wight nor does it add much thickness. I feel very comfortable and very confident while holding it. I can honestly say I will keep this case on my device. Which is saying a lot since I am one of those people who personally hates cases. Installation of the case was a breeze and took no more than a minute to attach to my device. It is easy to remove, but not so easy that I fear it will fall off if I drop it.

Below you will find some photos of the Vibrant case.

Doesn’t look to bad right. If you look closely at the last photo you will see a rubberized square. That is actually a plug cover for your headphone jack. I kinda like that. I have had issues with getting lint in there before from my pockets, that issue is now solved.

As for the G2 case, it fit very well also. Being that the device has moving parts, the Commuter Series case comes with 2 shells. One that fits to the screen and one that fits to the keypad. It fit very well and was also easy to install. Took a few more minutes than my one piece Vibrant though. Again, the case is designed to be very slim and not add much extra weight or size to your device. Here are a few of the case for the G2. You should immediately see a slight difference in the shells styling. It seems to be a little more flashy.

If you have been looking for a great case for either of these 2 devices or for another device, head on over to Otterbox and take a look at what protection solutions they have available for you.
