There was a time when the Palm brand name was all the rage in the tech space. I actually owned a Palm Pilot, one of the best touch personal organizers of the time, but being 13 years old, the only thing I really cared about organizing was my hair. It was the world’s first look at touch displays in the personal device market, but since that time of prosperity, the Palm brand has all but faded into obscurity. But to save it from fading completely into the darkness, smartphone manufacturer, Alcatel Onetouch, has apparently just bought the rights to the Palm trademark from HP, which begs the question: could Palm smartphones one day be on the horizon?
Alcatel Onetouch isn’t exactly a household name, so it might be trying to use the Palm brand, which arguably has nostalgia on its side, to kickstart its smartphone sales. Whether this would be through its own Alcatel devices with ‘Palm’ flourishes, or through a separate Palm line of devices is anybody’s guess. Really, there’s no telling what Alcatel Onetouch will decide to do with this new trademark, if indeed anything at all, but there’s a small part of me that hopes the Palm brand gets one more hurrah, for old time’s sake.
