Amazon announced that users can now use Amazon Coins, their digital currency, to make purchases in the Amazon Appstore and on the Kindle Fire. Starting today, Kindle Fire customers will have $5 worth of free coins deposited into their Amazon accounts to be used toward apps and games in the Appstore.
Amazon Coins will be an added bonus for app developers on the Amazon network. Developers will still be able to their 70% revenue share from customer purchases with Amazon Coins, albeit with an easier payment method. In-app purchasing within the Amazon Appstore will also allow developers to sell virtual items in their apps, giving users the ability to use their Amazon accounts for purchases. Apps that are submitted to the Appstore are then distributed to 200 million countries worldwide.
Amazon will be joining several social platforms with virtual currencies for in-app purchasing, as well as digital currency platform, bitcoin. Facebook sells “credits” for apps and games and Zynga uses “zCoins” for a similar purpose.
Amazon also implemented discounts for bulk purchases of Coins, an added incentive to save money on apps and games. You can purchase Coins on the Amazon website.
