An update on Swype

While at CITA last week, the guys over at AndroidGuys had a chat with Mike McSherry, the CEO of Swype. If you aren’t familiar with Swype, it’s a new text input program for touch screen devices. You can read more about Swype’s features here.

The big question posed to Mike was, “Swype is great, so why isn’t it available on the Android market yet?” The answer to that is simple. Swype has agreements with other companies that must be fulfilled before they can offer Swype for sale. An example of this would be Motorola Cliq. As of now, there is no comment on when that may happen.

There are a couple bright spots however. By the time Swype does come to the market, it should be sleek and fast. And if you can’t possibly wait for that day to come, you can  sign up at their site as a beta tester. Their sign-up is currently closed, but you can get on a list to be notified once they open things back up. Sign up is here.

Swype plans to bring more than just their mobile input. Future plans include support for voice input and integration with computers and TV.
