“We do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone. Folks who want porn can buy and (sic) Android phone.” -Steve Jobs
He really makes Android sound dirty doesn’t he? It’s as if iPhone is like Disney World on opening day, pure as driven snow, and Android is some seedy back-alley bar where if you’re not careful you’ll be taking home some contagion along with that morally loose person you picked up. Â Clearly we all know better, but boy does he like to drive home how safe iPhone is.
Except that it really isn’t. Andrew Kameka over at Androinica has written an interesting rebuttal to Mr. Job’s statement. While it’s true there are no porn apps on iPhone, that won’t do anything to stop someone from seeking porn through other means. Namely, if you can type a URL, you can get yourself some triple X action:
“And while we’re on the subject of porn, I’d also like to expose another outlet of debase material we should work together to block: Safari, Playboy, and Hooters (all of which are readily available on iPhone). For far too long, we have let the scourge of the Internet corrupt our children with adult material that any 12-year-old can discover. Therefore, we must put a stop to this and keep the iPhone in a Disney-like environment. I don’t want my kids exposed to such materials.”
It really knocks his pedestal down a few doesn’t it? While the porn industry isn’t mainstream, but neither is Android in some regards, it is still an business that is continually developing and expanding into new media outlets even without Apple’s help.
