Integrasco is a Norwegian consulting firm which monitors trends in social media to see what people are talking about. In their latest report entitled “The Battle of the Mobile Operating Systemsâ€, they found Android had the most buzz in Q4 2009 with a 40% share of mentions.
For 2009 they found the HTC Magic (myTouch 3G) raised awareness of the Android platform, but it wasn’t till the HTC Hero came out that the buzz started to take off. The Motorola Droid really placed Android on the map as it was the most discussed Android handset when it launched in Q4 2009.
Handset makers HTC and Motorola also benefited from Android’s rise. HTC gained 12% of the mentions in Q4 2009 and became the 3rd most talked about manufacturer. Motorola experienced a significant boost in share of mentions when the Droid was released, but it has dipped since then (7% share, 6th place).
Android related highlights include:
- 2009 was the year of the application centric device, with Apple’s iPhone OS and Google Android paving the way. In 2007/8, the biggest online ‘buzz’ driver was the ‘megapixel race’; today, that has turned into the ‘application race’.
- The Android platform has been the biggest climber in 2009, in terms of both popularity and share of ‘buzz’ amongst consumers in social media. The HTC Hero and Motorola Droid set the stage for consumer expectations and, with the launch of the Google Nexus One, 2010 will be a very promising year for Android-based devices.
- Both HTC and Motorola have traditionally been very focused on Windows Mobile devices. Adopting the Android platform has led to a significant increase in buzz for both manufacturers in 2009.
- The Motorola Droid made a major impact in buzz awareness towards the end of 2009, firmly placing Android on everyone’s radar.
