Today an indictment was issued that accused Megaupload.com of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in losses from pirated films and other content. All of this was put into action today, the morning after the SOPA blackout that so many sites participated, us included. They arrested four individuals in New Zealand at the request of U.S. Officials. Two other defendants are still ‘at large’.
Prior to the site being taken down they issued this statement –
“The fact is that the vast majority of Mega’s Internet traffic is legitimate, and we are here to stay. If the content industry would like to take advantage of our popularity, we are happy to enter into a dialogue. We have some good ideas. Please get in touch.”
Megaupload was pretty unique to the community. It received high-profile support from celebrities, musicians and other content producers who are often victims of piracy and copyright infringement. It was endorsed by the likes of Kim Kardashian, Alicia Keys and Kanye West to name a few.
This will be a huge blow to the Android community and the developers that we love and support so much. If you happen to be a developer with your work hosted on their site, you better get to work and upload it somewhere else and update you links, cause Megaupload is gone, at least for now.
