LG USA has said on their Facebook page that there are minimum requirements for Gingerbread. Â As you can see in the conversation they state that the Optimus S and T, as well as Optimus One overseas, will not be upgraded to Gingerbread due to not meeting the minimum requirements.
This might also answer the question of why HTC is being so, um, careful to not say which phones will be upgraded to Gingerbread in the future.
HTC: “We are excited about the OS update coming for Android, and while HTC will definitely have some phones running this OS, we do not have a specific timeframe for new phones or updates at this time. Please stay tuned for more detailsâ€
So, we’ve heard the rumors before; but this is the first that I have heard any manufacturer state this openly like LG did today. Â Clearly the horsepower is there in phones like the G2, Desire Z, etc. Â But this might go down as a huge problem for those who do not use custom ROMs as it may end up being a real issue for the typical user.
I do want to hold out hope that the G2 can be updated, officially. Â I don’t know whether or not to take this with a grain of salt or not. Â Please let us know what you think in the comments below.

UPDATE: As was posted in the comments below it looks as if LG was misinformed.  According to Brian Swetland Sr. Staff Engineer over at Google wrote here.  I’m sorry for jumping the gun on this one.
