Can you turn a Galaxy Tab into a Kindle Fire? Someone sure Did

Why buy a Kindle Fire if you have an old school Galaxy Tab lying around? That was sort of thought that Kevin from Gigaom had. He picked up a Kindle Fire and has been contemplating keeping it or sending it back. During his long thought process of what to do, he thought about the Galaxy Tab that he has sitting around. Figuring out that both devices are very similar he wondered if the Kindle Fire software could be ported.Talk about a crazy idea.

So he did what any aspiring and thoughtful person would do. He turned to the XDA Community for some answers. Being that Android lets you flip-flop files and pretty much destroy everything easily, he gave it a whirl. Since the home screen of the Kindle is pretty much just a launcher application with a skin overlay, that was pretty easy to make work. Thanks to a post by XDA member vansmack, you can also pick up the Amazon Instant Video apk and get that up and running. That file also works on your Galaxy Tab 10.1 if you wanted to know. Of course it is not without its limits. Kevin managed to get quite a bit up and running on his Tab with help from some various locations. The best part, none of it required a custom ROM or flashing anything at all.Just by taking a system dump of the Fire and playing around with various files, he made his Tab look and act like a Fire.

It is far from a perfect process, but if you are interested in reading through his entire journey direct yourself over to his article at gigom.com.
