BlackBerry has endured a tough few months. Not only did its release of its messaging app, BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), on Android and iOS degenerate into a failed attempt, it’s recently been under scrutiny during rumoured talks of its potential sale, whether in part or wholly, to either Cisco Systems, Google or SAP. With all this action and the impending downsizing of its global workforce, it’s hard to see how any work could have been done to fix the issues seen on BBM when it was leaked a few weeks ago. But according to BlackBerry chief marketing officer, Frank Boulben, the issues have mostly been solved, and we can expect to see BBM on both platforms “within days”.
Boulben also mentioned that there are 6 million Android and iPhone users that have registered to be informed when BBM is released, so clearly there is interest in the messaging platform, but we’ll have a few days to wait and see if this release occurs without issue this time. Despite the fact that many people have voiced their disdain of the BlackBerry-branded messaging app, it will actually be capable of quite a few useful features which we’ve come to expect from instant messaging apps; see more in the 5 Things You Should Know About BlackBerry Messenger for Android.
