I really love the Android Community. I feel a very strong pull to its ever growing members list and the great things we are capable of together. Sometimes, though, we get a little overexcited. We do silly things like vote 250,000 times for a pumpkin via a script, push 1GHZ phones to 1.6 GHZ to say that we could. Then, we do stupid things, like taking rumors and running wild through the streets with them regardless of whether or not any truth can be found in the piece. This is the story of the so called “Nexus S” and its impending launch.
As far as I can tell, it started with this piece on the 26th from CityAM.com (thanks to @droidhead_ryan for the source). The story tells a great tale of what could happen in the future for a Nexus Two. It includes some vague insider information and quotes, and ends with “The phone – dubbed the Nexus Two – is expected to run the new version of Android, codenamed Gingerbread. It is not yet clear who will manufacture it, although rumours surrounding a Samsung model are believed to be untrue. Both Google and Carphone declined to comment.” This information alone is innocuous until you combine it with Samsung’s release event on November 8th and the Gingerbread Man showing up on the Google Campus this week. If you read that article, and if you have seen one of the event invites on half a dozen websites, and you have seen the YouTube video of the Gingerbread man, AND you want to create some buzz around something you THINK may be true, you do what anyone else would do. You call up Radio Android and drop an anonymous leak.
There’s an ENORMOUS problem with this concept, the biggest of which being that it was dead wrong. Anyone who actually got the email from Samsung’s PR firm, or bothers to communicate with Samsung at all would know that the November 8th Samsung event is the launch of the Samsung Continuum. For those unaware, this device is completely Samsung, and a unique concept at that, but I will leave details out for the release.
In short, guys, it’s bogus. The 8th will not yield a Nexus 2 and the Continuum will not have Gingerbread. Stay tuned though, it will still be a great party.
