Galaxy Note 4 powered Samsung Gear VR headset now up for purchase at AT&T and Samsung

The land of augmented reality and wearables has steadily been moving forward. Google poked fun at it a little with the Google Cardboard app and instructions on how to build your own out a piece of cardboard and a few inexpensive parts that can be found all over the web. While fun, practical in many situations, and interesting, it isn’t something for everyone. At least not yet. Samsung jumped into the mix this year with the announcement of their entry to the virtual reality market in partnership with Oculus Rift. The headset, dubbed the Samsung Gear VR, is basically a glorified housing unit that you strap to your head after you insert your Galaxy Note 4 to the mounting brackets.

The Gear VR headset is showing up AT&T’s site today as a web only sale option for $199.99. While not noted on their site, the press release lists them as the ‘Innovator Edition’. Samsung also has them up for order directly through the OEM with the same innovator edition tag. Meaning they are more geared towards developers and early adopters then something that is really aimed at general public consumption with a set purpose. I think is going to be the target audience for a while, at least until they get the developer backing to make them more than just a cool and fun gadget to have at your desk.

I know Sprint is supposed to jump on the Gear VR band wagon as well, but I don’t see the product up on their site at the time of publishing this. I would image they aren’t going to be to far behind AT&T on it though. Anyone out there considering snagging one of these to check out, or is it still to “eh” of a product to garner the expenditure?
