Game Review: Dominoes by Carl Hopf

Dominoes, one of my all-time favorite table games, showed up in the Android Market by game developer Carl Hopf last month. I’ve played it for a couple of weeks now and can easily say it has become one of my favorite games for all of my mobile devices. I have it installed on my HTC Amaze 4G and on my Asus Transformer (TF101) and the game runs as smooth as silk on both machines. Best of all, it’s totally free, so anyone with a device rocking Android 2.1 or better can join in the fun. The game file is small as well, so this simple, yet fun and challenging game won’t hog up your storage space or system resources while you’re playing.

The rules of the game are just the same as the traditional version. If you are not already familiar with the game, I’d suggest taking a look at this page for information on Block Dominoes, at this page for a full rundown on how to play Draw Dominoes, or this page for the details on Muggins Dominoes, also known as Scoring Dominoes or Jailhouse Bones for those of you who’ve done time in the slammer. In Carl Hopf’s version, these are the only three methods you’ll need to know, as they’re the only ones available for play.

The game features both single player games against a bot, or you can play online with up to 3 additional opponents. The multiplayer version features a ranking system, so you can keep track of just how badass you are, or see in advance how bad of a beating you’re about to take from that guy who’s ranked 4,000 points above you. You can also use the chat feature in multiplayer sessions, so feel free to rub it in when you’re winning — just don’t have any hard feelings when karma comes around and I’m the one yelling, “Dominoe!”

Dominoes gets a 5-star rating from this guy here. Sometimes it’s not all about the most mind-blowing 3D graphics available. This is the case with Carl’s version of the game. Nothing too intense, and just the right amount of visual appeal mixed in with a super gameplay experience that is unmatched in any of the other versions floating around out there.

On a side note, we’d like to congratulate Carl Hopf for Dominoes reaching the 1 million+ downloads milestone in the Android Market. Bravo to you, my good man!
