EPOCH for Android is what iRobot would have been if Will Smith hadn’t stopped the robots from taking over. You have this post apocalyptic world where robots, none of which have a defined “I’m good” or “I’m evil” look about them, shoot at each other. Simple, to the point, addicting, with a hint of story line. That is what makes a great mobile game. What’s more is this game is powered by Unreal Engine, so the graphics and gameplay are smooth and very detailed.
You all know the drill. The review is based on three things. First, the UI of course. Then, we look at functionality and ease of use. Then, we top it off with rating the lasting impression. Let us begin, shall we?
The User Interface: 9/10
The graphics for Epoch, stunning. Then again, that should be a no brainer based on what is built upon. When I open the app, I am greeted with a start menu overlaying a cut scene with your main character staring with that “I’m a hero, I know the camera is watching, but I’m going to look off into blank space as if I’m alert” look. There were three buttons. The start button, exit button and settings button. Straight to the point, easy to understand. I enjoy how I get this really computer style interface without the game regressing all the way back to 8-bit graphics. Few games have been able to pull off the whole “Mr. Roboto” look without losing the finesse of the high definition graphics in the process. I applaud their success.
Functionality: 8/10
When I saw Epoch, I expected for it to have this complicated layout of controls like N.O.V.A. 3 or something. Turns out, you have two controls, swipe and tap. You swipe to move your character, and you tap on enemies to initiate the shooting action of your character. I deducted two points, not because I don’t like this style of gameplay, but because there were times where my swipes were unresponsive, very rare occurrences, but when you are in a high intensity fire-fight with four or five other bots, two seconds of unresponsive controls could very well cost you a fourth of your life, literally. And thank you to the stars above, it has tutorials!
Lasting Impression: 9/10
I played Epoch every chance I got. I played it in the waiting line at Walmart, I played it in class, I played it in the bathroom. Every chance I got, I played it. I didn’t get to play for a long time, but little snippets nonetheless. I would recommend this to anyone. The only recommendation I have for the developers is to get the swipe and tap blueprint thing down to a science. Any delay could cost the player their life.
Final game rate: 9/10
