First of all, the letters aren’t randomly generated. Rather they are mixed in a precise set of scenarios where each letter can be used at least twice in a given game. This is kind of important to know because you get bonus points for using each letter once and twice. Â Obviously if you can get each letter used twice you will have a higher score and a higher global ranking. Each letter has a designated number value, much like scrabble, and your word scores are automatically calculated. The better your words the better your score. That is a no brainer.
There is much more though. When you start a game the timer starts. You have to find as many words as you can in the allotted time limit. They are nice enough to show you a running total of words that can be found against the number of words you have found. Near as I have seen there are always over 100 words per board and in most cases over 200. Unless you are a human dictionary there is a high chance you will never get every single one, or even find many of the more obscure words like ‘rowting‘ or ‘gnathic‘. Yes, they are real words. At the end of every game you get to see your total score, your percentage of words found and score percentage for the board. They also list all the words you have found and all the words on the puzzle. To take a step further, if you take a second to click on a word it will show you where it is on the board. It is crazy to see how easy some where to find and you missed them.
The developers as added in a little customization for users as well. Heading into the settings you can change the colors of the tiles, boarders, letters, letter points and a few other small custom tweaks to help you see the board better.
WordHero is definitely not an easy game, but it is extremely additive. Trying to better your vocabulary and move up in rankings can eat up an afternoon or evening in a hurry. I spent a good 4 hours playing the first time I launched it. Finally my eyes started to droop and I realized it was 2 A.M.
If you are in the market for a great FREE game to help keep you busy, entertained and your mind sharp, than WordHero is a must have. Be prepared for a little stress when that timer breaches the 1 minute marker and you realize you have only found 20 words. A few tips – If you are struggling to find a word hit the ‘rotate’ key at the bottom right of the screen. This will rotate the letters 90 degrees to the right. Some times a different orientation can trigger your eyes and brain to see a new word. If you think you already got the word you just saw, swipe it again, never hurts to double-check. If there is an ‘S’ on the board, use it. By that I mean add it to the end of every word that you find that ends close to it. for instance; mower-mowers, dog-dogs, cat-cats. that gives you another word and a few more points. I have also found that if you focus on getting the bonus points by using every letter once and then twice you can generally get a better score at the end. Don’t hesitate to start out with simple quick words. It is easier to get 15 or 20 words out-of-the-way right off the bat and look for bigger words at the same time then study the board or too long.
