Gmail v4.2 APK released for all rooted users to Enjoy

Earlier this morning we showed you guys a little insiders look at the newest Gmail update that AndroidPolice got their hands on. It showed off some great new features like pinch-to-zoom, sliding to archive and how/where attachments were moved to. It looked like a stellar update that we know all of you were very eager to get your hands on. AP wasn’t able to release the APK for everyone right away and had to get the clearance to do so first. Knowing that you guys are as eager to get your hands on the new Gmail update as much as we were, we kept hitting refresh. They just recently updated their original post with the download links for you guys to get your hands on the latest update now.

Before you get all click happy and excited though, there are some stipulations. First, you need to be rooted and be running Android 4.0+. It isn’t guaranteed that it will work, but it should. Updating the Gmail app isn’t as easy as updating the Play Store was. You need to know your way around your device a little and be able to remove Gmail from the system and push the new APK in. This update isn’t for the faint of heart, sorry. AP cross checked the APK in the Play Store versus the one they have and it is still signed by Google, just with a different key. So a straight sideload update won’t work.

They have an amazing set of instructions and a few various mirrors of the apk available for you guys to get your hands on. Rather than re-list it and walk you guys through it, we are going to direct you to their page. If you are up to the challenge head over to AndroidPolice and snag the file. Otherwise, sit tight as we wait for Google to either push out the update, or one that can be easily sideloaded gets passed around.

Update: Grab an inverted version of this new Gmail (with a G+ bonus) in our forums here.
