While, we’ve heard that Google is hard at work on a Siri competitor, that’s about all we’ve heard for the last couple of months. Rumors popped up all over the place claiming that the service would feature the Star Trek-inspired name ‘Majel‘, but it looks like Google may have gone back to the drawing board on that one and is now calling it ‘Assistant’. We also had no idea of when to expect the service to hit the streets, but that has changed as well.
Thanks to a report from TechCrunch, we’ve just found out that there may still be a long road ahead until Assistant sees the light of day. Check out the excerpt below:
The project, helmed by the Android team with the involvement of search engineer Amit Singhal, has three parts according to a source.
1)Â Get the world’s knowledge into a format a computer can understand.
2) Create a personalization layer — Experiments like Google +1 and Google+ are Google’s way of gathering data on precisely how people interact with content.
3) Build a mobile, voice-centered “Do engine†(‘Assistant’) that’s less about returning search results and more about accomplishing real-life goals.
According to one source, Google higher-ups plan on unveiling the ‘Assistant’ product by the fourth quarter of 2012, though they themselves are uncertain.
While, this is definitely exciting news for those of us who can patiently wait until the end of the year to see it in action, I can assure you there will be just as many impatient people who want to moan about the wait. In my opinion, I’m glad Google is taking its time to fully develop the project, and not rushing it and delivering something that is less than spectacular. Only time will tell.
