Google Offering Online Video Rentals with YouTube

Google has now officially entered the Online Video Rental business using YouTube and your Google Checkout account to deliver a small selection of rental quality videos.

Google, feeling left behind by the likes of Amazon, Apple, Hulu, Netflix, and Blockbuster has decided to turn their library of videos into a streaming success and allow you to purchase video and then watch them on any device that supports YouTube.  This means your Android phone!

The selection is still scarce on comparison, but I’d expect the behemoth to very quickly increase the size of it’s library.

In fact, with a quick search on YouTube a mere 3 pages of videos showed up in the For Rent category.  Some good movies, but not enough to entice me to the service.  Some memorable names include: The series of SAW movies, Reservoir Dogs, Precious, Lord of War, Gamer, and Dogville.

A quick test of gamer revealed that the cost would be $3.99 and I would be able to watch the movie for a mere 24 hours which really isn’t long enough for online digital content.
