Google Partners with Sony, Logitech, Intel and Dish for Google TV Initiative

Google TV was officially announced today at Google I/O 2010 with amazing acceptance and ground work for an instant success.

When Google announced that they were going to give details about the new Google TV platform, I fully expected People Of Lava to be featured.  So maybe People of Lava jumped the gun and the Android TV they are releasing is not based on the new Google TV platform. Who knows!

It sure is nice to see Sony and Logitech at the core of the new Google TV platform and products already working that show off this amazing new integrated platform.

I currently have a Samsung Led HD TV which has their own (or yahoo’s) widget based system allowing access to a lot of content on the internet including streaming TV from the likes of Netflix, VuDu, and Blockbuster. It certainly doesn’t have any of the integration that the Google TV platform has.

When I look at this technology, I think of the people in the Wall-E movie being carried around in floating chairs, never having to walk again.  The day is coming when we will never have to leave our sofas.

Besides this lazy provoking thought, I’m extremely excited to see what they can do next and how many of the current cable and satellite companies will become a part of it.  Having a single interface to all your TV programming,  Channel guides and DVRs while browsing for information on your favorite show or the scores for the latest game, all while your watching TV in  your Picture-in-Picture in the corner is very cool.

Sony is building TV’s with the new Google TV technology built in, Logitech are building add-on boxes to use on your exiting TV’s and Intel are providing the processors.  We also heard that Google has partnered with Dish Network for integration into Dish digital video recorders. Sounds like a good team to me.  I wonder who else is getting involved in the background!

I think Google have launched this initiative at just the right time.  The operating system is at a point where it’s optimized and stable and Google biggest contenders, Apple and Microsoft have only had mild success in this market.

Google will also integrate the newly announced Android Market place enabling access to Android applications directly on your TV.  Anyone thinking instant gaming machine?
