Google Uses Kill Switch To Uninstall Android Apps

Google has recently announced their Remote Application Removal Feature and yes, they have used it before. This feature acts as like a remote kill switch, that uses an OTA function to remove applications. A research team had developed two applications that “intentionally misrepresented their purpose in order to encourage user downloads,” stated by Android Security Lead, Rich Cannings. Don’t worry those applications were not malicious nor did not have access to private data.

This article was released soon after an article was published claiming the amount of security threats on Android and suggesting approximately 20% of the Android Market could be infected. The good news is that as soon as Google finds a malicious app, it can be terminated.

“This remote removal functionality — along with Android’s unique Application Sandbox and Permissions model, Over-The-Air update system, centralized Market, developer registrations, user-submitted ratings, and application flagging — provides a powerful security advantage to help protect Android users in our open environment.”- Rich Cunnings.
