Hands on look at the Sony Xperia Arc

I had the rare opportunity to spend a few minutes with the Sony Xperia Arc during the tail end of CES. I feel this is a real unsung hero of recent devices. Even though Motorola and LG put their best foots forward at the show and sort of over powered any competition. The device is reportedly going to replace the Xperia X10 device and could be a major player in Android very soon. I was very impressed with the device. Even after spending some time with the Motorola Bionic and even a few special LG devices.

There were a few key factors of this device that really impressed me. The thickness blew me away right of the bat. The device measures in at a minuscule 8.7mm thick, the Samsung Vibrant comes in at 9.9mm. If you think the Vibrant was thin, it has nothing on this device. Sony has also managed to pack a 8.1mp camera with a flash in the back of the phone and can manage to take 2 photos per second. Screen size sits at a comfortable 4.2″, pushing 16.7 million colors backed by the Sonymobile BRAVIA display. It is also sporting Android 2.3 Gingerbread for its OS with possibilities for future updates. CPU and GPU information is falling into the more recent standards, utilizing a MSM8255 chipset at 1 GHz with an Adreno 205 chip for GPU processing.

Something that was noticed by many, was the lack of a front facing camera. I am not sure if this will help or hurt the potential sales of this device or not. Personally, I am not big on a FFC at all. Overall, I was very impressed with the speed and feel of this device. The Screen is crystal clear and it was a joy to get my hands on.

We are still waiting to find out about a specific price point and release date so stay tuned for that information. We do however, know it is set for AT&T for now. For more information on this device check out Sony Ericsson’s website site.
