How To: Permanently Root Your T-Mobile G2

Thanks to the dedicated members of the Android community, we now have permanent root for the T-Mobile G2 and while many of you have been patiently waiting this milestone, you can find the instructions below. We’re sure that over time an easier method will be available, but for now take a look at the instructions below courtesy of XDA member, unforgiven512.

You’ll need these files here in order to free your device from sin.

WARNING: THIS COULD PERMENANTLY BRICK YOUR PHONE, INSTEAD OF ROOT IT IF YOU DO THE EVER-SO-SLIGHTEST THING WRONG. YOU’VE BEEN WARNED. I AM NOT LIABLE FOR YOUR STUPIDITY.

On that note, I would not recommend this on any phone other than the G2, as I have not personally tested it.

Credit goes out to scotty2, and all of the wonderful folks at #G2ROOT! WE LOVE YOU! <3

Firstly, run VISIONary to gain temp root.

Push the .ko file appropriate for your phone, and hboot-eng.img to /data/local/, then go ahead and open a terminal or adb shell

  • $ su
  • # insmod wpthis-[YOURVER].ko
It should give you some kind of error (I forget exactly what it says). That is good. In your terminal go ahead and...
  • # dd if=/data/local/hboot-eng.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
Wait a minute or two, and reboot. Congratulations, you are S-OFF!! Enjoy!!

There you have folks! Perm root for the T-Mobile G2, let us know in the comments what you think of perm root for the T-Mobile G2. Enjoy!
