Illegitimate Dropbox storage to be killed Shortly

Often times in the wonderful world of hackery, there is the good and the bad. Sometimes developers get a little ahead of themselves and figure out what a promotion is doing and codes it up to make everyone happy. Recently there is an APK file floating around a site we all know and love very much. It tricked the Dropbox servers into thinking you had a HTC One series device and gave you another 23GB of storage for free. It should come as no surprise that Dropbox is onto the little game and will be shutting down the additional storage. Not just making anyone that attempts to gain the space illegitimately unobtainable, but those of you that thought all was good in the world will lose your 23GB addition as well.

The official Dropbox 23GB HTC promotion will not start until sometime early this month, when the devices are released. To earn the extra 23GB of extra Dropbox space you will need to link your HTC Sense 4.0 device to your Dropbox account and complete “Get Started.”

The method to earn 23GB that is being circulated on the XDA Developers forum and on other blogs and forums is illegitimate. We plan to remove any space received using this method.

Downloading apps from unknown sources is not a good idea, as they might have been modified to include malicious code. We strongly recommend that you only install the Android Dropbox app via Google Play (formerly known as the Android Market) or from official download links on Dropbox.com.

So if you picked it up and are flying high with all that extra space, you may want to get those files re-downloaded before they disappear, if they haven’t already.
