Instagram clears 100 million active users, that’s a lot of Photos

Instagram
Last month Instgram posted up 90 million active users. Just 40 days later they have pulled in another 10 million active users. That is some pretty big growth, 11.11% in 40 days to be more precise. 100 MAU’s in just 2.5 years is pretty big accomplishment for any company, especially since it was an iOS only app for a good portion of its life. while there were talks of 100 million users a few months ago, that was just total users, not active users. I would fall into that category as I have an Instagram account and the app, but have only opened it once to look at it since installing, on launch day. Sorry, just can’t get into it.

“One night soon after launch, about a half-mile away, Giants Stadium was full of fans cheering on their team in a race for the NLCS against the Philadelphia Phillies…While we may only have had a few thousand people around the world using Instagram that night, we had a sense that maybe through Instagram we could tune in to what was happening just a few steps away.”

“With a few quick commands at his terminal, my co-founder Mike’s screen filled with images of the game: the bullpen, dugout, concession stands, cheering fans and a panoramic view from somewhere up high…Now, nearly two and a half years later, over 100 million people use Instagram every month. It’s easy to see this as an accomplishment for a company, but I think the truth is that it’s an accomplishment for our community.”

The sheer amount of data the Instgram handles in a given month is staggering. Claiming some 40 million photos per day, 8,500 likes PER SECOND and 1,000 comments per second. At peak levels, they are handling some 10,000 million likes a second.

If you are an Instagram-er, then you can take some pride in being part of the global community that is growing rather rapidly. How many of you out there have the app and the service? How many of you actually use it?
