If a post from Google Operating System is to believed, we might be seeing a new UI for our beloved Google Maps very soon. And does it ever look good. From what we can see from these screenshots, the interface of Maps has done away with many of the side bars and overlays, making for a much cleaner experience and opens up the UI for, well, more map.
The search bar in the top left looks suitably out of the way and what looks like a suggestion bar adorns the bottom edge of the screen when you find your destination in the search. Overall, this new design would best benefit mobile devices as it would give more screen real estate to work with when scrolling around an area on the screen.
Whether this redesign is coming soon or at all is certainly up for debate, but if it were to be announced sometime soon, I think sometime next week would a pretty good bet.
