Japan Display Demos Super Thin Touchscreen Displays

Japan Display Inc. specializes in small to medium sized screens. It is a newly formed company resulting from the combination of Sony Mobile Display, Toshiba Mobile Display, and Hitachi Displays. Since the company was just formed in April, they are only releasing demo units or “Innovation Vehicles” as they call it right now. Their latest creations are a 5 and 7 inch touchscreen that integrate the digitizer right into the screen resulting in incredibly thin designs that are 1mm and 1.5mm thick respectively. By utilizing white pixels, the displays eliminate the need for a back light and consume 40% less power than their back lit counterparts.

These units should be “mass-produced within the next year or so”. We may or may not see these exact panels in future smartphones, but these demonstrate what is possible. Ideas like using white pixels or integrated digitizers may become the norm, who knows? I’m curious to see what our favorite manufacturers do with this technology, here’s to the future.
