LG Cloud lands in the Play Store, very limited Support

Earlier today we alerted everyone that LG was getting ready to launch their new LG Cloud application in beta form to test it out. It was stated that it would be rolling out tomorrow. Since I am sure it is already tomorrow overseas, we get to see the application live here in the US today. With the app out now we get to take a look at few more details that weren’t available earlier. We now know that the service will compete with the other guys by offering 5GB of storage for free. If you happens to own an LG Smart TV or LG smartphone, then you will be given 50GB’s of storage. There is a catch to the 50GB’s though, It is only free for 6 months. No where currently can we locate what that amount space will cost you in the future, but the make mention in the FAQ section that larger storage sizes will be available in the future. It is possible they will keep it free after the Beta completes or possibly notify you of a monthly or yearly cost.

The Android app is available for devices running Android 2.2 and up. Now, there seems to be some issues in the description of the app that don’t jive well with us. Take a read at the first few lines –

LG Cloud – Seamlessly share your contents across your TV, smartphone, tablet PC, desktop/notebook PC, and online websites on this perfect N-Screen service.

1) Perfect N-Screen environment
LG Cloud service provides apps for a variety of devices including LG Smart TV, Android phones, PC, and online websites.

Here is our issue with it, it states Android phones… Not LG Android device or something similar. Further down you read 5GB free storage and if you have and LG Smart TV or LG Smartphone then you get the extra 45GB’s for 6 months free. Now I have a Vibrant, Note, Xperia, VTAB and a Revue all synced to my Play Store account. Not a single one of those devices is compatible with the app. No where in the description or any online information can I find why I can’t test it out. Even on the LGCloud website it states ‘Mobile App Android 2.2Plus’, abosolutely nothing about needing to be LG Specific. In the FAQ section is lists Android mobile phone: at least, Android 2.2 and higher(2.3 and higher recommended). I am hoping that lack of other device support is stictly due to the beta status of the application and not a move to force users to need an LG device without clearly stating it. That will easily and quickly upset a lot of people.

So far since it has been out a handful of people have give in a shot. One user review pegs the app to operate like Dropbox, Box and GDrive while the PC client is similar to SugarSync. They stated the web interface looks pretty plain and lacks a lot of features. Not surprising for a beta. He does however state that the video play back is fast. So that is a good thing. There is also a file size limit that may make some a little leary, granted it is much larger than most at least. The size limit is set at 2GB files which is confirmed in the FAQ’s.

I think we will keep an eye on this option strictly for the streaming benefit of the application. If they don’t make it available for all Android devices then I don’t see this being that big of deal to anyone not on an LG device. If anyone out there wishes to take a closer look and happens to have a device that it is currently supported on, please feel free to check it out below and leave your comments. Head to LG’s LGECLoud website for the PC client and other information.
