The Virtual Reality, or VR, movement has been picking up a little steam over the last year or so. Google certainly wasn’t the first, but they certainly did push the idea of using your smartphone as the screen and brains behind VR with their Google Cardboard project. It gave users and developers an easy way to get in the mix without spending thousands of dollars on gear. Samsung followed suite with the Gear VR which uses the Galaxy Note 4 and is backed by Oculus technology and more. Now LG is apparently working their way into the space with the VR for G3 unit.
The VR for G3 is targeted specifically at the LG G3. It is basically a plastic version of Google Cardboard with specific measurements to use the LG G3 as the screen.
“While still in its infancy, this is just the beginning of the virtual reality movement which until recently was expensive and inaccessible to everyday consumers,†said Chris Yie, vice president and head of marketing communications at the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “By leveraging Google Cardboard, not only are regular consumers able to participate in the VR experience, we’ll be able to introduce this technology to future developers who may one day show us how VR can be used to improve our lives.â€
LG states they will give these away later this month to people who purchase an LG G3, but they fail to mention any options for current G3 owners. The VR for G3 won’t have its own specialty app required to operate, instead it will use the same apps that users currently use for Google Cardboard. If you happen to buy an LG G3 later this month and get your VR for G3 you will also find a QR code in the box to obtain RoboBliteration for free.
Be on the look out for further details later this month, including the markets they will become available for.
