As of yesterday, LG and QD Vision announced their partnership to move forward with their QLED screen technology. This latest venture is guaranteed to produce richer color and increase screen brightness while reducing power consumption compared to anything else on the market. The press release states that these new screens will be flexible, much like the latest screens Samsung and other manufacturers have been working on. Just reading the first paragraph of the release make me tingle all over.
Watertown, MA, November 30, 2010 – QD Vision, Inc. and LG Display (NYSE: LPL, KRX : 034220), today announced a joint development agreement focused on creating highly-efficient, high-performance active matrix displays based on electroluminescent quantum dot LED (QLED) nanotechnology. The display will require much less energy than current products, while producing brighter, richer colors.
This could be huge for LG and Android and I am very interested to see these in action. Hopefully there will be a demo available at CES of this new screen to see how it really looks. I know we all struggle with battery life on our devices. Even when I tune my phone, the display seems to be my main consumer of the battery. I love my Vibrant, but if this technology gives me brighter and richer color and less power consumption, I might just look into the next LG device that is sporting the technology. I located a small informational video you can view. It’s more aimed at showing what the technology is, as opposed to its full applicable potential. Still a good video. Be sure to look below for the full press release as well.
Advanced display technology will produce brilliant, colorful images while requiring far less energy than today’s display products
Watertown, MA, November 30, 2010 – QD Vision, Inc. and LG Display (NYSE: LPL, KRX : 034220), today announced a joint development agreement focused on creating highly-efficient, high-performance active matrix displays based on electroluminescent quantum dot LED (QLED) nanotechnology. The display will require much less energy than current products, while producing brighter, richer colors.
The new breakthrough products will employ patterned thin films of QD Vision quantum dots to create a direct-view, active matrix display. In addition to energy and color improvements, the new technology is expected to lower display manufacturing costs by greatly simplifying the overall display manufacturing process.
“LG Display has always been at the forefront of advanced display technology. This partnership with QD Vision will accelerate development of exciting new LGD products for the rapidly expanding display marketplace, and increase our industry leadership position,†said Chang-Dong Kim, Vice President of LG Display.
Quantum dots provide the stability and reliability of inorganic semiconductor materials, and can be processed in solution. This enables the efficient manufacture of next generation electroluminescent displays with extraordinary color, efficiency, and stability.
