As per the latest report from Canalys, Micromax has left Samsung
behind to be the top smartphone manufacturer in India. The home-grown manufacturer managed to achieve the feat in Q4, 2014.
According to the report, about 21.6 million smartphones were sold in India during Q4, 2014, and 23 percent of these smartphones were priced under INR 6,000 while the digits got doubled to 41% for the smartphones falling under the price bracket of INR 6,000 to INR 12,000.
“Micromax has been quicker than its competitors to improve the appeal of devices, for example, by including a wide variety of local languages on its Unite phones. Lava, another domestic vendor, has launched devices that cater to the preference for greater battery life – in this case a couple of days. But vital to success is selling these handsets at low price points to appeal to the bulging mid-level income market in India,†said Canalys Analyst Rushabh Doshi.
Micromax leads the race with 22 percent market share of total smartphones sold in India while Samsung slipped to the second spot with just 20 percent of the market share. Products like the Canvas Nitro and Canvas Hue and other flagships have helped the home-based manufacturer in being the number one smartphone maker in the country. Local smartphone brand Karbonn grabbed the third spot, while Lava managed to sell enough smartphone units to become the fourth largest smartphone brand in the country, thanks to devices like the Lava Iris X5.
