Who wants some more Key Lime Pie? To be honest, I have never had the actual dessert, nor have I ever wanted to try it. But a little Android 4.2? I will try that any day. We have already reported about certain features the community would like to see on the next version of Android. This time, we have more rumors of features that sound just a little bit better than the first batch.
Android and Me have been reporting a lot about these rumors, getting their information from a trusted source. Today I also saw that Dan Morill, who works with the Android team, had this to say about the 4.2 rumors. “Reading rumor sites…LOL”. How dare he LOL at us. This could mean that all of this just be a bunch of BS. Then again, there are to many rumors out there to insist that they are all wrong. Some of the rumored features are just common sense on what we need to see in the next OS. Even these new ones that you read in the title of this post before you clicked on it.
A new Play Store is a given. Pretty much with every version of Android we have gotten a new Play Store. What enhancements will there be? Probably personalized search, optional promotional campaigns with notification center integration, more billing options, and easier in-app micro-transactions. Just little things that will make us Android enthusiasts happy.
Project Roadrunner is a random name that was thrown out there. First thing I thought about was Time Warner Cable’s email service, and I almost cried thinking they had something going on with that company. Project Roadrunner will apparently focus on improved battery life. Such that Project Butter improved the overall OS experience, Roadrunner will hopefully make our dreadful battery woes go away. Something tells me that Motorola had something to do with this, since they seemed to have some pretty good battery life on their Droid Razr Maxx. I am really hoping that this Project Roadrunner is not made up, which I am sure everyone in the community is hoping as well.
Enhanced Google Now is also a given, simply because there is still a lot they can do with the app. When Jelly Bean was shown off, Google Now was the most talked about feature of the entire OS. The rumor for Google Now is that you will now be able to ask your phone to access certain controls, such as turning on bluetooth, or changing the brightness of your screen. I can see that being appealing for the newbies, but for someone like me that has been using Android since the beginning, I do not feel the need to tell my phone to do something a simple toggle on my homescreen can do. I am mainly looking for improved voice recognition, and maybe the ability to talk dirty to me. Totally kidding about that…kind of.
Customization Center and updated video player have been talked about before. I really think the Customization Center is a must, simply because we all have different tastes on what goes on our phones. Android is all about customizations, and according to recent rumors, the Customization Center will allow us the choice to use the OEM’s UI skin if we please. I am sure anything that has to do with customizations such as, wallpaper, ringtones, launchers, etc, will be added as well.
So it seems like every couple of days, there are new rumors out there about Key Lime Pie. They are even talking about 4.2 just being the road to pave the way for Android 5.0. It makes sense to me. Make some necessary enhancements before a full overhaul. We will not know which are BS, or which ones are true, until that sexy new Nexus device gets unveiled sometime really soon. Until then, Dan Morill and the rest of the Android team will chuckle with one and other at all the rumors and speculations that us here on the bottom of the Android hill keep talking about.
