New Report Indicates AMOLED Display Shortages Could Take Years

A new report from iSuppli indicates that the AMOLED shortage could take longer than expected. Currently Samsung and LG are the only manufacturers of the super AMOLED displays. There are some smaller Taiwanese companies capable of producing the same technology, but due to their small facilities, they won’t be able to produce large amounts until later this year. Samsung, who originally made the displays for the HTC Droid Incredible and the HTC Evo 4G, is making the displays for themselves. They are pushing their own Samsung Galaxy S devices out and with their goal of making that device available in 110 countries andthere is no sign of slowing down. Samsung is currently working on a new $2.2 billion production facility that is expected to go online in 2012.

The HTC Droid Incredible was the first major device to show signs of the shortage and since then, the HTC Evo has fallen victim to the same fate. HTC is now using an LCD display which is deterring customers. These displays are a main selling point for these high profile devices and die hard customers can quickly spot the difference in these two displays. Let’s hope that the rumors we hear are true about HTC possibly making their own displays for the rumored superphone, the HTC Sabor.
