Who would have seen this coming? Rumours coming out of Japan have said that Nintendo is currently looking at ways of converting their consoles so that smartphone apps and games can be utilized. This is big news for the games giant as its latest ventures into the console industry, the Nintendo Wii-U and the Nintendo 3DS, have struggled mightly against both higher-end consoles and ever-growing mobile gaming. The news is also somewhat ironic after the Wii-U was rumoured to be running Android this time last year.
The move, if true, makes a lot of sense for Nintendo as this would potentially allow Android or iOS games to be ported to Nintendo consoles and go a long way to making their consoles seem more attractive to the gaming community. Just imagine that: a Nintendo Wii-U with access to Google Play! This strategy also makes a lot of sense as both the Wii-U and the 3DS have touch interfaces and would make porting games with touch as the core game mechanic much simpler while still retaining the bonus of having hardware buttons.
Whether this news specifically refers to either Android, iOS or games on both platforms, the mobile industry can probably take this news as further affirmation that mobile gaming is a frontrunner in the gaming race and is not to be ignored.
