Among the buzz of yesterdays Motorola and Sprint event for the Motorola Photon 4G and Triumph, we were pleased to learn that Motorola would be embracing the development community by allowing their devices bootloaders to be unlocked. Of course with a new device coming out and the mention of an unlocked bootloader, fans went nuts. However that has proven not to be the case.
The guys at Droid-Life reached out the Motorola in regards to this statement for a bit more clarification and what they got in return is sure to kill the mood levels that rose so high yesterday. As it seems that the Photon 4G will not have an unlocked bootloader.
Motorola has recognized the passion around this topic in our communities. Â As we’ve previously communicated, it is our intention to include the unlockable/relockable bootloader in software releases starting in late 2011, where operator and channel partners will allow it. Â However, this feature is not included in the software found on PHOTON 4G.
And, after a bit more digging they got an even more direct answer.
It will not contain the unlockable/relockable feature; additional details beyond that will be available when the product comes to market. Â As you mention, our intent is to enable this feature on devices later this year and we will share updates on that as they become available as well.
while the news of this is unfortunate it’;s not really as bad as it seems. We have a new Motorola device with webtop capability and all the NVIDIA Tegra goodies we crave, and it’s just like the other Motorola devices, locked. The key thing to take from this is not that this particular phone has a locked bootloaders but, that Motorola is finally realizing that this needs to change and already has plans set forth to do so. So before the bashing starts, stop and think. It’s not any different from what we’re accustomed to.
