There are moments in time that you come across something so simple, so amazing and so perfect, that you just have to stop and say “Wow, awesome.” A lot of that happens in Vegas during CES and it isn’t always Android related. While walking through an event we passed a table that had an item on it that made us stop in our tracks and look twice. It was small, it was bright and it had a purpose. The product we are talking about is by MPOWERD and it is called Luci.
Luci is probably one of the simplest of creations we have seen in a while. It doesn’t need constant recharging, there is no power plug, it isn’t a fancy new touchscreen and it doesn’t have a processor. When you first see Luci you think of a beach ball. It does kind of look like one. It is made of a similar material and is round around the edges. The top and bottom are both flat and have handles on each side. On the inside bottom you will find 10 small LED lights. On the outside bottom of that you will find two solar panels.
This little thing only weighs 3.8 ounces and it collapses for travel. Just like a beach ball, you blow it up when you want to use it. Solar charge time is around 6 hours which will produce anywhere from 6 to 12 hours of continuous light. It offers up fifteen square feet of light in the darkness and can be dropped, tossed or left floating in your pool for light at night. Luci has a small button located in the center of the solar panels to operate the lights. Either low light, bright light or flashing light.
In a disaster situation, light can be hard to come by. Your batteries could go dead, your flashlight could get dropped in floods and be rendered useless or you could just be suffering from a power outage with no light available. The simple design and ease of use of the Luci is simply outstanding. I know Luci is going to end up in my camping and hiking supplies immediately.
The Luci is currently available to order for just $15.95. That excludes tax or shipping of course. Soon they will be launching a a Buy-One-Give-One model. Where every purchase you make for your self, will put a Luci on a plane some where that is off the grid and doesn’t have access to light other than fire. As they say, join them in Ending Energy Poverty.
If you want to take the next step, Luci is also up on
Indiegogo. It gives you a few options for contributing. All are aimed at giving the 3 billion people in the world a ray of light. The money raised will also help fund further R&D to bring the next Luci to light. You guys should really check them out.
